An ongoing debate this summer amongst the West Coast Bella Girls has been: are we a truck? We certainly look like a truck. And we sound like a truck. And we go through our large gas tank like we’re a truck.
But there are certain things that have caused us to wonder if we do in fact have to adhere to the truck speed limits, or if we have to take the truck detours on the highway, or stop at the weigh stations etc.
Thursdays will now be “truck day” for the West Coast Bella Girls, where we share our discussion on whether or not we count as a truck. If you have thoughts or opinions or advice, chime in!, because I expect the debate to continue for the rest of our time in our pretty pink and orange vehicle.
Reason number 1 why I argue that we are NOT a truck: if you check this website, from California’s department of transportation, there’s a section that lays out the dimensions of a truck. Length: a truck can be up to 40 feet long. We come in at 23 feet – way under. Width: trucks can be up to 8.5 feet wide. At 8 feet, we’re under that too! And height: we’re 11.5 feet tall, trucks can be up to 14 feet.
Ok, so I know that being under the requirements doesn’t mean we’re NOT a truck. I mean, if a vehicle looked just like a truck and was 39 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 13.5 feet tall, well, I’d probably say that’s a truck! But if you look at that height section, there’s a list of roads that have clearance of less than 14 feet, and they list the heights of the lowest clearance. One of those roads is 11o in Southern California, which our GPS wanted us to take nearly every day, and which we would dutifully avoid, because it said “no trucks”. But if you look at that chart, the lowest clearance on that road is 13.5. So, my logic tells me that the reason they say no trucks is because the clearance is less than 14 feet, and you’re allowed to be 14 feet as a truck! Since we’re well under the low clearance of 13.5 feet, I think we’re not a “truck” as far as those roads are concerned, and that we could use those roads.
But, as I said, it’s an ongoing debate. Are we a truck? Let us know what you think!
